Everyone says dress in layers. Sure, fine. But if your base layer sucks, nothing else matters. I spent money on good merino wool base layers and it changed cold weather hunting completely. Stop cheaping out on the foundation. What cold weather gear investment actually made the biggest difference for you?

As someone who used to ride a motorcycle in cold weather, I found flannel lined blue jeans under a pair of leather chaps to be the ticket.
Of course dressing in layers under a good coat but keeping one's legs warm is essential.
You make a good point and I think as far as riding, the leather coat is the real key as it blocks, yet breathes.

For whatever reason, my legs can get cold, but not cause me tremendous discomfort, as long as I keep my core torso warm. I guess we are all a bit different.

Well when you work construction outside most of my life base layers to start but a good pair of Carhartt insulated bibs and coat are the ticket for working in cold weather and you learn not to run the heat on your car to warm on the way to work and on high on your way home from work
