The job I enjoyed the most

One of my favorite jobs was working outdoors in my 20s, yeah it was a grind with long hours and grubby clothes, but man, I slept like a log every night!

I've had a number of jobs in my lifetime, 4 stood out. I was born & raised deep in coal country, SW Virginia, so naturally my first real job was working in coal mines and I did that for quite a few years. I had a stint as a long-haul truck driver for a few years, I realized that I could have simply starved to death at home and found no reason to do so in the seat of a truck. I worked as a machinist for about 15 years, very satisfying work. My final job was GM for a large PVC pipe manufacturing plant, worked my way up from the very bottom, after 32+ years I retired from that job. I must say that overseeing that plant was the most satisfying work I ever did.

I spent some time farming, some in the oil fields of South Texas, and some behind the wheel of an 18 wheeler. In 1983, I took a job in Central Ark. I basically worked in a sheet metal shop that produced industrial Air Handlers - those that you find on top of shopping malls, Hospitals, Sporting Arenas and the like. I worked my way up to dept supervisor and I understood the machines and the process pretty well. Very satisfying work. I did that for 1almost 3 years or until the company shutdown the Little Rock operations. My last job (30 years) was making car parts until I retired last year. Farming was by far the most satisfying work. Paid very little, but you didn't want for very much. Times were much simpler and you found joy being outdoors working a pace that was set by yourself.

One summer, I was on a road crew fixing up highways. It was long days in the sun, with loud equipment and dirty clothes, but it was good, hard work and I liked doing it.
