Planning a trip to visit family and trying to figure out the best route. Bringing a firearm along is important to me, but going through New York State really complicates things. I've heard a lot about their strict gun laws, and I don't want to risk getting caught up in any legal issues. Avoiding New York adds a ridiculous amount of drive time, so I'm weighing my options. I've thought about taking a longer route through Pennsylvania or maybe heading down through New Jersey, but that might come with its own set of challenges. Anyone else been in this situation? What route did you end up taking, and how did you handle the firearm situation? I'm open to suggestions.

Avoid New Jersey, they have actively ran out of state plates looking for CCW holders for years. A single hollow point round loose in your car is jail time.
Don't stop in NY. You can travel through but any stops, even for gas, creates problems.
I rely on https://handgunlaw.us/ to help figure out what laws apply where.

To be honest with you, I would be avoiding those states anyway......

Not an answer to your New York question, but I avoid Illinois too; fortunately I can avoid it by adding only 30 minutes to an hour to my route visiting family.

I am not advocating you do as I, it's a personal decision, from my personal experience, I paid more attention to my clothing choice for concealment. I carry OWB covered by a loose fitting shirt to cover. That has worked for me, it may not in the future, that is a chance I take and have done so traveling through the states mentioned above plus CA.
I don't carry my weapon in locations not permitted per law as prescribed by my TN CC license, if I must frequent those locations the weapon will be temporally locked in my auto.

Good for you. Imagine what those poor people in Cincinnati would have given to have had a weapon when the ruthless animals beat them into a pulp.
