I opened a fresh bottle of Hoppe's No. 9 the other day and it wasn't the same as what I remember using when I was a kid. The smell wasn't the same, it used to bring back memories. Has anyone else noticed that it smells or cleans differently these days?

Yeah, the original scent was like stepping into a classic gun room but this new one is weaker and almost too clean. I miss that strong smell it used to have

Interesting, a lot of folks have said the same thing lately. I wonder if they might’ve changed the formula for safety or environmental reasons, or is it just our nostalgia playing tricks on us?

The original scent is not available anymore because some ingredients in the original mix like nitrobenzene could cause cancer.

I am down to my last old bottle. I too will miss the smell. However, I use Kroil for rust prevention and that stuff can take over any room in a good way.

Nothing can be kept as-is... 😞

Although I still have a few quarts from many years ago, I now dread it when I finally do run out of my stash...
Seriously, saving those old bottles is smart! They might be worth a lot someday even just to smell that vintage stuff. :)

Yeah, this new stuff feels like a watered-down take on the scent that a generation of shooters loved

It sucks when the good old smells change! You’re right, @PETE . The old stuff wasn't safe, so they had to change the formula, the stuff they make now still works.
