I'm looking for a dependable rifle scope that won't break the bank or my rifle. Any suggestions for options under $300 that hold zero well and have good clarity for deer hunting?

Take a look at Monstrum line. I bought the Banshee 1-8 LPVO last year and it is super nice.
The value for the dollars is for sure there.

Leupold VX-Freedom 3-9x40 with 1" tube runs $299.
American made, warranty, and great glass for the money.
It will last a lifetime.
I also concur with Burris Fullfield II scopes; I've had 3 different models and each was terrific.

Now having said that, don't be afraid to look at used glass as well.
I recently sold several older Nikons (early 2000s) for wayyy less than $300.
They were Philippines made but quality was excellent.

I wish I'd known of your Nikon sell as have and like many Nikon scopes and always looking to add more.

I would try to find a good used scope at this price point. I’ve used many Leupolds over the years. My favorite that should be in your price range used is the VXR 3-9. The Firedot reticle is hard to beat in point and shoot situations.
